The Berlin Nakroma is an East Timorese ferry that connects the state capital Dili with the exclave Oe-Cusse Ambeno and the offshore island of Atauro .

history

The Berlin Nakroma unloading in Panta Macassar

Ferry traffic in the country, which has been independent since 2002, was built up with financial support from Germany . The chartered Uma Kalada was in use from 2003 to 2006, which was replaced by the Berlin Nakroma in February 2007 . This ship was also financed by the German government in cooperation with the KfW banking group . The Berlin Nakroma was built in Surabaya ( Indonesia ) by the shipyard Pal Indonesia Perwakilan Yard . The launching of the ship took place on 14 September, 2006. The commissioning of the ship took place in 2007 as Nakroma ( Tetum for shining / glowing light = "rising sun"). The acquisition costs amounted to 5.7 million euros. With the repair yard financed by Germany, the total amount of development aid amounts to 12 million euros.

After the previous governing party FRETILIN was voted out of office, the new East Timor Council of Ministers decided on April 9, 2008 to rename the ship in Berlin Nakroma as thanks for the good cooperation between Germany and East Timor .

In August 2013 the Berlin Nakroma was taken out of service due to "minor damage" and sent to Surabaya for an overhaul. The Ministry of Transport therefore tried to charter a ship from Indonesia as a replacement. The Berlin Nakroma is now back on the road.

In 2019 the class of the ship will be suspended .

Registration

The East Timorese national colors adorn the hull

The Berlin Nakroma belongs to the East Timorese government, since East Timor does not yet have a ship register, it is operated under the “Indonesian flag” and is registered in the home port Jakarta . A few years ago, Dili was indicated as the home port on the ship itself, and the flag of East Timor was shown in 2013 instead of the usual flag of the register state .

technology

The ship is 47.25 meters long and has a measurement of 1134 GT. It can be loaded and unloaded using the RoRo procedure via a ramp attached to the bow . The Berlin Nakroma can transport up to 300 passengers and 170 tons of cargo. The drive system consists of two Yanmar diesel engines, each with an output of 1000 hp, which act on the two fixed propellers via gearboxes. The energy supply is ensured by two Volvo Penta diesel engines of the type TAMD 103 A with an output of 306 hp each.
