Yanmar Co., Ltd. is an international mechanical engineering company from Japan with production and sales facilities in Europe, North and South America and Asia. Yanmar mainly manufactures engines for boats and ships, as well as construction machinery and small tractors.

history

Founding time

The company was founded in 1912 as Yamaoka Hatsudoki Kosakusho . The brand name Yanmar has been used since 1921. In 1933 the "first practically small diesel machine" was developed and in 1942 the first "Nagahama" plant was opened. Since 1947 small diesel engines , primarily for use in construction machinery, generators and boats, have been manufactured and sold. In 1952 the company acquired its present name Yanmar Diesel Engine Co., Ltd .

New markets

In 1961, an offshoot of the group that is active in the agricultural machinery sector was founded, Yanmar Agricultural Equipment Co., Ltd. In the following year, the group opened its first branch outside Japan in Singapore as a service station. In the same year the founder Magokichi Yamaoka died . Succeeded by Yasuhito Yamaoka, who died after only one year in 1963, by Tadao Yamaoka, the active today chairman was replaced. In 1966 the second service station outside of Japan was opened in Thailand . In the course of the expansion, construction machines were also manufactured and sold. In 1967 a branch in Malaysia was added. Since 1972 the group can also be found in Indonesia ; in the same year the Yanmar Shipbuilding & Engineering Co., Ltd. and Yanmar Sangyo Co., Ltd. founded. The company has been represented in Europe with a service station in the Netherlands since 1976 . The first location on the American continent was established in 1981 in the USA .

In 1982, Yanmar began manufacturing gas turbines and in 1984 manufacturing outboards. Yanmar became the only series manufacturer of diesel outboard motors . In 1989, the Ammann-Yanmar France joint venture was founded, based in Saint-Dizier, for the manufacture of mini and midi excavators, wheeled and tracked loaders. In 1996 a new factory was opened in Biwa (Japan), which today produces almost 400,000 industrial diesel engines per year.

Since 1999 boat engines have also been produced in the Netherlands. Their range of services was expanded upwards, the program was supplemented by diesel engines for fishing ships, ferries, tugs, etc. In 2012, a revised high-speed 12-cylinder marine diesel with 1340 kW at 1940 / min. presented.

Yanmar has held a stake in the Indian tractor manufacturer International Tractors Limited since 2005 , the share today is around 16% (as of 2016).

In 2016, Yanmar took over the European compact construction machinery business of the Terex Group. The purchase of around USD 60 million also included the German production site in Crailsheim and the spare parts logistics site in Rothenburg ob der Tauber.
