Ardgroom ( Irish Dhá Dhrom ) is a small village on the Beara Peninsula in the west of County Cork in Ireland . It is located on the bay called Ardgroom Harbor, on the north side of the peninsula, near the border with County Kerry . It is an Irish national monument .

To the east of the village, in a region known as Ardgromm Outward and on the road to Lauragh, are a number of megalithic monuments including boulder burials , forts , menhirs , rows of stones and stone circles . There are 187 stone circles in the Republic of Ireland. The majority is in County Cork , with 103 counties . 20 counties are in County Kerry and 11 in County Mayo .

Canfea

The most picturesque is the south-western stone circle "Canfea", which is closest to the village and is also known as the "Ardgroom SW Circle". Its consistently conical stones, which are only found in a similar shape in the Drombohilly stone circle, are unusual . The circle of Canfea consisted of eleven stones, nine of which are still in the circle. Another stone stands outside the circle, through which a low wall also runs.

Dromard

The nearby Dromard ring fort is one of the examples of a fort that includes a basement . The buried entrance is in the center, the other is in the west. The corridor is about six meters long and one meter high and wide. No stones were used for the construction ( earth-cut ). In the case of basements , a distinction is made between “earth-cut”, “rock-cut”, “mixed”, “stone built” and “wooden” (e.g. Coolcran, County Fermanagh ). At the end of the corridor is a chamber of irregular shape. It is about three meters long, one meter high and 1.2 m wide. There are two narrow passageways, one to the right and the other to the left, that lead out from it. The arched corridors are so small that you can only crawl through. The second chamber is on the left. It is about two meters long, 1.2 m wide and one meter high. On the right side there are three entrances to different chambers. The only one going to the left leads to a 5.4 m long, two meters wide and 1.2 m high chamber. It has a vault like the others, but it's not so perfect. The narrow passage from this chamber leads into another four meter long, 1.65 meter wide and 1.2 meter high chamber that has collapsed.
