Poet doctor

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term poet doctor or writer doctor describes a ( fiction ) writer with medical training.

Anton Pawlowitsch Chekhov , Michail Bulgakow , William Somerset Maugham , António Lobo Antunes , Stanisław Lem , Archibald Joseph Cronin or João Guimarães Rosa are often mentioned as examples of well-known doctors who were also or mainly active as a writer . Paul Fleming , Johann Gottlob Krüger , Albrecht von Haller , Friedrich Schiller , Georg Büchner , Arthur Schnitzler , Oskar Panizza , Gottfried Benn , Alfred Döblin and Uwe Tellkamp may be regarded as well-known German-speaking poet doctors . Just as the term “poet doctor” is often used by doctors themselves, so little has it become a literary object due to its lack of clarity. For the doctor Volker Klimpel , author of encyclopedias on “writers-doctors”, “the concept of the poet-doctor goes beyond that of the pure poet [...] and [encompasses] practically all literary genres including journalistic, editorial and editorial work as well as philosophical and cultural-historical treatises […]. The purely scientific-medical works are excluded. ”This is contradicted by current literature and sciences studies, which consider all imaginable medical spellings to be worthy of analysis through literary studies. For example, the “Serbian psychiatrist Radovan Karadžić [who] wrote poems, children's books and novels” is known less as a poet doctor than as a war criminal . According to literary scholar Carsten cell would provide "[a]> Medicine literary history layer <relevant texts and authors [...] even with a limitation to newer German-speaking Writers and poets doctors (u. A. Kruger , Haller , Schiller , Buchner , Schnitzler , Oskar Panizza, Doblin , Benn , Tellkamp ) a purely random selection (cf. Klimpel 1999). "

Beyond their literary historical value, reference is made to the importance of the poet doctors for the history of medicine, where they provide important source material through their authentic knowledge and their insight into the workings of medicine: “The hidden corners of the hospitals and laboratories, the outpatient clinics, are opened by a qualified hand and ordinations, the infirmaries and death rooms. ”Friedrich Schiller, Georg Büchner and Arthur Schnitzler emerged as dramatists, were at the same time pioneers of modern psychosomatic medicine and rebelled against their fathers and national fathers. In 1965, the " Union Mondiale des Écrivains Médecins " (UMEM) was founded as a world organization for medical writers. Since 1970 the German-speaking poet doctors have been organized in the "Federal Association of German Writers and Doctors".
