The almanac of German-speaking writers-doctors is an anthology with poetry and prose texts by German poet -doctors that has been published every autumn since 1978 .

The Almanac is an anthology of poetry and prose written by doctors, compiled annually by the editor and published in autumn. It contains a selection of around fifty articles each, covering a wide range of topics. The topics are not limited to medicine. Purely medical specialist work and case reports are not included, but personal medical experiences and impressions that are written in a narrative style or as poetry are. The editor alone selects the articles.

history

The almanac was initially published from 1978 to 1994 under the title Almanach ... deutscher Schriftstellerärzte . Publishers were initially Manstedt and until 2011 Wittich in Marquartstein, from year 34, 2012, it is the publishing company W. E. Weinmann in Filderstadt.

The first editor was the general practitioner, writer and journalist Armin Jüngling (1909–1985). Before the Almanac was founded, from 1971 onwards, Jüngling published seven anthologies as poetry by German doctors. The other anthologies included B. Dialect poetry by German doctors (1975) and Christmas stories by German doctors (1976). In 1977 the collection of prose texts appearances and reality was published . Breit-Verlag, Marquartstein, published the first edition in 1978, which was named Almanach deutscher Ärzte. The Lübeck dermatologist Jürgen Schwalm (* 1932) was the second editor from 1985 to 2003.

Already in the early days a friendship developed between the young man and Schwalm. Together they decided which articles were published. The almanacs initially contained the year name of the year in which they usually appeared in autumn. Schwalm changed this in 1986 by naming the almanac 1987. That is why there is no 1986 Almanac, because the 1987 Almanac was published in autumn 1986.

Jüngling and Schwalm came up with the idea of ​​opening the almanac not only to all German but to all German-speaking doctors, regardless of their origin or place of residence. For this reason, Schwalm changed the original title Almanach deutscher Schriftstellerärzte to Almanachischer Schriftstellerärzte . The almanac is continued in this sense. Schwalm had been editor of the almanac since 1978, and after the death of Jüngling from 1985 to 2003 editor.

Stephan Tobolt , neurologist and psychiatrist, was the editor from 2004 to 2011. Dietrich Weller , general practitioner and pediatrician, has been the editor since the 2012 Almanac, which appeared in autumn 2011 until the 2020 edition. Until then, the Almanac was published by the WE Weinmann publishing company, Filderstadt , relocated. Weller is also a board member of the Federal Association of German Writers and Doctors . With the 2020-1 edition, which appeared in May 2020, Rainer Andreas Seemann and his Spain-based publisher Seemann Publishing took over the publication.

Short reviews of the almanac were published in the Deutsches Ärzteblatt at irregular intervals until 2015 . In the last reception, Thomas Gerst wrote :

“In all honesty - poems, whether from a medical or non-medical pen - are not exactly my passion, I tend to be drawn to prose. Because that is the case, I would rather restrict myself to pointing out that the new almanac of German-speaking writers-doctors is on the market with contributions by 55 authors and consists mainly of poems, the quality of which I cannot judge because of the above disposition. "
