Poet pastor (more rarely: writer pastor and pastor poet ) is a term that emerged in the late 19th century for a ( fiction ) writer who is active in his main profession as a Protestant or Catholic pastor (also retrospectively). Most of the time the pastor's job remained a bread-and-butter job, but it sometimes happened that a pastor earned more with his writing than with his main job (e.g. Gotthelf) or with writing as his main job (Goes). It is not uncommon for pastors to publish their literary works under a pseudonym (e.g. Jeremias Gotthelf alias Albert Bitzius or BT Jonas alias Jonas Breitenstein ). In most cases, is the literary production of poet pastors in a context of pastoral work, the direct test in the hymn writers (eg. B. Gerhardt). Since the second half of the 20th century, it is not uncommon for pastors to write crime novels (e.g. Knellwolf).

On the other hand, it is not common to use the term pastor of poets for writers with theological training but without a pastor's office (e.g. Johann Peter Hebel , Joseph Victor Widmann or Carl Spitteler ).

Members of the order who are active as writers are called poet monks . Analogous word formations are poet doctor and poet lawyer ; In contrast, the terms poet teacher , poet craftsman and poet salesman are rarely used .
