Martin Behm , also Martin Böhme, Behme, Behemb, (Martinus) Bohemus (born December 16, 1557 in Lauban ; † February 5, 1622 ibid) was a German Lutheran pastor , writer and hymn poet .

Life

Behm's father was the manager of the town's wagons and fields. Martin attended school in his hometown as well as in Vienna , where a relative of the family lived. In 1576 he enrolled in Strasbourg to study Lutheran theology . His circle of friends there included the humanist Johannes Sturm , who was 50 years his senior . His father died in 1580 and Martin returned to Lauban, where he first became an assistant teacher at the city school, then a deacon (third preacher) at the city church of the Holy Trinity . In 1586 he moved to the first parish office, which he held until his death.

Behm was a versatile writer. He published volumes of sermons in which he sprinkled his lyrics, as well as sacred plays and historical and moral observations of time. His songs were widely used. One of the best-known is How lovely is the May from pure God's goodness ( EG 501), which was associated with a melody by Johann Steuerlein in the 20th century . His texts influenced the poetry of early German Pietism .
