Philipp Wackernagel

Karl Eduard Philipp Wackernagel (born June 28, 1800 in Berlin ; † June 20, 1877 in Dresden ) was a German hymn researcher , Lutheran teacher and co-founder of the German Evangelical Church Congress ; Literary historian and spokesman for "historical" spelling.

Life

First he dealt with mineralogy , then with research on the origin of Protestant chants . After completing his studies, he became a teacher and most recently director of a secondary school. His two most important colleagues were his fatherly friend Karl von Raumer and Friedrich Heinrich Ranke . His interests were very diverse: mathematics, pedagogy, German studies, theology, but mainly he was concerned with researching hymn sources. In 1861 he moved to Dresden and devoted himself entirely to this work.
