Richard Gutschmidt (born May 11, 1861 in Neuruppin ; † February 3, 1926 in Munich ) was a German painter , book illustrator and graphic artist .

Life

From October 15, 1884 to 1891 he was a student of Herterich and Löfftz at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . As a painter he was traveling in Munich , Berlin and the Mark Brandenburg . He belonged to the Munich artists' cooperative , later to the Luitpold group .

He became known in 1902 as the first German illustrator of the Sherlock Holmes stories. In 1905 he was a participant in the competition for advertising drafts for joint advertising by Ludwig Stollwerck and Otto Henkell . His design was recommended by the judges for purchase for 200 marks.
