Schulze-Smidt was the daughter of the Bremen Syndicus , director of the State Archives and Senator Heinrich Smidt (1806-1878) and granddaughter of Mayor Johann Smidt (1773-1857). She had four siblings.

Growing up on Gut Dunge, she tells about it in the book Jugendparadies in 1895 . She received her education in Bremen. In 1869 she married the Sondershausen resident , later Hanoverian , government councilor Ernst Oswald Schulze (1836–1887) in Münster . During their marriage she wrote short stories from 1874 and novels from 1880; first under the male pseudonym Ernst Oswald and since 1883 under her own name. Her novels corresponded to the realistic taste of the time. In 1911 the novel Die Engelswiege appeared , which was acted in Bremen at the time of the Reformation . The memory book of her grandfather Mayor Johann Smidt from 1913 also remained important. Her translations show that she mastered the Turkish language, which was unusual for a woman of the time.

Widowed, she lived first in Munich and later again in Bremen at Meinkenstrasse 70 and, since 1914, Contrescarpe 25. She was committed to social issues in Bremen.
