Johann Christian Kühtmann

Johann Christian Kühtmann (born June 22, 1815 in Bremen , † June 30, 1869 in Bremen) was a German bookseller and publisher .

biography

Kühtmann was the son of a consumer. He graduated from the cathedral school in Bremen. He completed his apprenticeship with the bookseller Carl Schünemann . He then worked for the Kaiser bookstore. After initially not receiving a license as a bookseller, he worked as a bookseller in Prague .

In 1844 he became a partner in the bookstore and the Schünemann publishing house , based in Bremen's old town at the 2nd battle gate. In 1845 he took over the company. It was now called Carl Schünemanns Buchhandlung, owner Johann Kühtmann . From 1847 the company was Kühtmann & Co .

Kühtmann deepened the publishing business in particular for school books, dictionaries, city maps, city views and geographical works. The works Views of Bremen by Friedrich Wilhelm Kohl , Krüger's Pictures from History and the North German Sketches by Johann Georg Kohl were significant . Literature and political works - with some difficulties with the authorities - were also published. Then there were also travelogues - z. B. von Gerhard Rohlfs - translations as well as local and classical writers in the repertoire . In 1853 the company moved to Martinistraße and in 1859 to Unser-Lieben-Frauen-Kirchhof .

After Kühtmann's death, his wife took over the business and sold it to Gustav Winter in 1885. Kühtmann's son founded the Gerhard Kühtmann publishing house in Dresden.

The legal scholar Alfred Kühtmann was his nephew.
