Friedrich Wilhelm Kohl

Friedrich Wilhelm Kohl , often short F. W. Kohl , (born October 16, 1811 in Bremen , † September 18, 1864 in Norderney ) was a German painter.

biography

Kohl was born in Bremen in 1811. As a result of an accident at the age of three, he was handicapped for life. His artistic talent was shown early on, which he first expressed in portraits and porcelain painting . With financial help from some Bremen art lovers, he studied at the Düsseldorf Academy from 1847 to 1841 . Between 1843 and 1844 Kohl created pictures of the apostles as well as of Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon for the Bremen Cathedral . He painted another Luther portrait for the church in Blexen .

His series of views of Bremen with twelve lithographs from 1845 to 1846 is best known . From 1848 to 1851 he was in Berlin for further studies . After returning to Bremen, he created more cityscapes and portraits. In 1843, 1860 and 1864 he exhibited works in the Bremen Kunsthalle .
