Johann Focke (born June 8, 1848 in Bremen ; † December 10, 1922 there ) was a Syndicus of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen and founder and director of the Focke Museum in Bremen named after him .

Life

Focke was the son of the judge Wilhelm Focke (1805-1865) and the brother of the doctor and botanist Wilhelm Olbers Focke . He attended the old grammar school in Bremen . He studied law at the University of Heidelberg , the University of Berlin and the University of Göttingen . During his studies in 1867 he became a member of the Frankonia Heidelberg fraternity . After taking part in the Franco-German War as a soldier , he received his doctorate in 1873. jur. At first he worked as a lawyer . Since 1875 he has worked for the Bremen Senate as a government secretary in the area of ​​ports, railways and poor relief. He was also the administrator of the workhouse and the deputy registrar. In 1878 he became Senate Secretary and on November 11, 1898 Syndic of the Senate in Bremen .
Johann Focke is the father of the painter and aircraft pioneer Wilhelm Focke and of Henrich Focke , the aircraft manufacturer and co-founder of Focke-Wulf AG.

Services

Since 1881 Focke planned to make his privately collected Bremensien accessible to the public in a local museum . It was not until 1900 that he was able to open the Historical Museum in the cloister and refectory of the former Katharinenkloster. In 1918, in honor of Focke's 70th birthday, the museum was renamed the Focke Museum for Bremen Antiquities . The Focke Museum had to move several times, and the holdings grew steadily.
Since 1898 he was a member of the board of the Bremen Historical Society and contributed to giving this society a strictly scientific character through in-depth research.

Honors

A street was named after him in the Sebaldsbrück district .
