Kränzchen library

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Kränzchen Library was a girls' book series by the Union Deutsche Verlagsgesellschaft , published from 1899 to 1934. The novels were initially published as a sequel in the magazine “Das Kränzchen”, and particularly successful ones or those by the best-known authors were subsequently published in book form.

The stories in the books can be summarized as classic " fried fish literature ". The most successful authors of the time, such as Else Ury and Henny Koch , published some of their books as part of this series, many of which have now become very expensive collector's items. The books by Else Urys in particular now reach prices between 100 and 400 euros in second-hand bookshops.

The series provides an overview of the girls' literature that was customary from the imperial era and of the most popular and successful then, but now mostly forgotten authors of this genre.

The number of editions clearly shows how popular some of these books must have been. Else Ury's Fourteen Years and Seven Weeks in particular was a bestseller of the time.

Even then, young girls preferred romantic literature and travel experiences such as Lissy and The Hidden Handwriting as nationalistic themes such as father's house and fatherland or love's home country . This preference has persisted to this day.

As much as frowned upon by literary critics, the fried fish literature still has its followers today. Other authors in this genre are still unforgettable and successful. Books such as The Defiant Head by Emmy von Rhoden or Anne auf Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery , which were created at the same time, still achieve large editions today.
