Anne of Green Gables (original title: Anne of Green Gables ) is a children's book by the Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery , the first edition of which was published in 1908 .

action

Anne Shirley is a red-haired, freckled orphan who is accidentally sent to live with the elderly bachelor Matthew Cuthbert and his unmarried sister, Marilla, who is also unmarried. Matthew and Marilla take Anne in although they were expecting a boy to help them on their farm. They live on Green Gables (the name comes from the green gables of the house) in the fictional town of Avonlea on Prince Edward Island .

Anne's wild imagination, incessant talking, and fiery temperament place her at the center of a series of entertaining adventures. As she grows, nurtured by the love and discipline of Marillas and Matthews, she develops into an intelligent and independent young woman who uses her imagination constructively. The book describes their development from 11 to 16 years of age.

Other important people are her best friend Diana Barry, her class rival Gilbert Blythe and the town's "gossip aunt" Rachel Lynde.

The story is about as well known in the English-speaking world as Pippi Longstocking is in Germany. Since Anne on Green Gables was the favorite book of the writer Astrid Lindgren , Pippi Longstocking is inspired by the spirited red-haired Anne.

LM Montgomery was inspired for the book by a newspaper article that reported on a couple who were accidentally sent an orphan girl instead of an orphan boy, but they took her in. LM Montgomery also processed memories of her own childhood on the rural Prince Edward Island ( Canada ) at the end of the 19th century.

Sequels

As this book met with great success, LM Montgomery wrote other books on Anne. From the sixth volume, Anne of Ingleside , Anne's children, in the last volume Rilla of Ingleside, especially her daughter Bertha Marilla , are the focus. The volume Rainbow Valley was first translated into German in 2013.

Timeline of the plot

In the Anne books, dates are almost never given, nor are any dates of birth of the people. The action of the book Anne of Green Gables takes place in the last quarter of the 19th century (probably from June 1877 to summer 1882).

This chronological table contains the years and age of Anne and important events based on the statements in the book Rilla of Ingleside that Anne and Gilbert were married for 24 years and Warsaw fell. Based on further information from the books, Anne's year of birth and all of the following years can be derived:

Chapter 16 of Rilla of Ingleside says: "Warsaw has fallen," said Dr. Blythe [...] one warm August day. The fact is that Warsaw was captured by German troops on August 5, 1915. So the action takes place at this point in August 1915.

Chapter 19 speaks of February . This would mean it is the next year, ie 1916. This year is confirmed in Chapter 21 by the mention of June 20, 1916 .

A chapter earlier (20th chapter) it says:

Where are you wandering, Anne o'mine? , asked the doctor, who even yet, after twenty-four years of marriage, [...]

What are you thinking about, my Anne? asked the doctor (note: Gilbert), who even now, after 24 years of marriage, [...] "

- Excerpt from the English version of Rilla of Ingleside , Chapter 20

This means (since it is known from the book Anne in Four Winds that the wedding anniversary of the Blyths was in September) that they were married for twenty-four years in September 1915 (it would be in September 1916, but in the chapter concerned it is only between February and June, 25 years). This implies that they married in 1891. Anne was 25 years old at the time, which results in the year 1866 of her birth. Based on the year of birth and wedding year, one can deduce many other years in which the action takes place.

My mother doesn't want any of us to get married before twenty-one. ”Since Diana is the same age as Anne, the year is 1884. In a week Mrs. Rachel Lynde would be moving to Green Gables [...]. ”So the wedding is in the last week of August and the other two happenings are in September. It must be the year 1884 because it happens after Anne has finished teaching at Avonlea and she is preparing for Redmond.

Two chapters later (p. 157) there is talk of summer. In the chapter Prince Charming (p. 165) it is November and two chapters later (p. 173) it is March again, so a year has passed and Anne and Diana are 21 years old. In the following chapter, An Evening in June (p. 177/180), we speak of June and it is said that Diana's wedding will take place in 5 days. So she married in June 1887 at the age of 21.

The action takes place after Anne has just finished studying, so it's 1888. Also on the same page is the talk of Phil's wedding. The chapter Diana's Wedding (p. 182) mentions that Phil will get married next June, so it will be June when Diana's child will be born.

The year must be 1888, after Anne has finished college and got engaged, as Gilbert says he has another 3 years to study and he hardly takes a break from one or more semesters.
  32. The book Anne in Windy Willows. is divided into 3 years. Sept. 1888 + 3 would be summer 1891.

This is Anne's 2nd year in Summerside, so it was late 1889 (first year is Sept. 1888-summer 1889). At the beginning of the chapter, Christmas is mentioned, so the birth could have been in December.

  45. ^ Lucy M. Montgomery: Anne in Ingleside. Loewe, 3rd edition 1992, ISBN 3-7855-2382-3 , chapter 1, p. 9, quote: It's been nine years since you moved away, [...] . Anne moved away in 1891 after their wedding, so it is now 1900. Also in this chapter the cherry trees are in bloom. Chapter 5 mentions June, Chapter 8 July, Chapter 11 August and Chapter 12 November. In chapter 14, it's January, so it must be the next year, 1901. In the same chapter a quick succession follows until May. At the end of Chapter 15, June is mentioned. Chapter 16 speaks of poppies. Chapter 19 speaks of autumn and winter. It's Anne's birthday in chapter 20, so it's March, which means it's 1902. In chapter 24 it's June. Chapter 26 says, “In the last week of August, Nan and Tue came to school.” Chapter 29 is October and November. Spring came in Chapter 30, so it must be 1903. This chapter says: "Jenny Penny was nine, so only one year older than Di [...]". That means Di and her twin sister are 8th 1903 - 8 = 1895. If the book runs chronologically and no year (or the order of the months) is left out, that would mean you were born in 1895. It can be assumed, however, that there are two or three time leaps in this book, since the months do not correspond to the number of years in the book. At the beginning of the book it is 1900 and at the end of 1906. Probably between chapters 23 and 24 there is a time jump from 1902 to 1903. Chapter 22 speaks of spring and chapter 24 of a June tower, which is why one could assume that the plot still takes place in the same year, i.e. 1902, but in chapter 24 it is also mentioned that Jem is 10 years old. Jem must have been born in 1893. 1893 + 10 would be 1903. So the action in this chapter takes place in 1903. Two chapters later, Di and Nan come to school, so probably also in 1903. If you now look at the chronological order of the months again, it would be 1904 in the 30th. Chapter in which it is mentioned that Di is 8 years old, that would result in the year of birth 1896.
