Green Gables ( Engl. : Green Gable ) is a farm in Canada Cavendish on Prince Edward Iceland . As the main location of Lucy Maud Montgomery's novel Anne on Green Gables , it became an international tourist attraction.

The farm was built in 1831 by David Macneill Sr. During Montgomery's childhood, the farm was home to David Jr. and Margaret MacNeill (cousins of Montgomery's grandparents), with whom she spent much of the time. For her children's book Anne of Green Gables , published in 1908 , she used the farm and its surroundings as inspiration. The name Green Gables comes from herself and goes back to the green-painted gables .

In 1937, Prince Edward Island National Park was established, the boundaries of which enclosed the Green Gables property . As a result, the building became the property of the Canadian government. The surrounding farmland has been converted into a golf course .

Because of its importance to Canadian literary history , Green Gables was declared a National Historic Site . The exterior of the building has changed little over time. The interior of the house has been carefully designed according to the novel in the style of the late Victorian era and is open to tourists. Around 200,000 people visit Green Gables every year  - around 6,000 of them come from Japan , where the Anne novels and the animated series Anne with the red hair based on them are particularly popular.
