The Prince Edward Island National Park ( English Prince Edward Island National Park of Canada , French Parc national du Canada de l'Île-du-Prince-Édouard ) is a Canadian national park on the north coast of Prince Edward Island , along the St. Lorenz Gulf . The park extends over a length of about 60 km and has an area of around 22 km². The closest city is Charlottetown . It consists of three sub-areas along the coast, namely Cavendish, Brackley-Dalvay and Greenwich. The park itself was established in 1937, but expanded in 1998 to include the area belonging to Greenwich , which is particularly characterized by sand dunes. The protected area also includes extensive sandy beaches, sandstone cliffs , offshore islands, freshwater wetlands , salt marshes and forests.
The park is an IUCN Category II ( National Park ) protected area managed by Parks Canada , a Crown Agency (federal agency).
Flora and fauna
In total, over 400 different plant and 300 different animal species have been documented in the national park.
In particular, the following endangered animal species were found in the park: The beaches serve as a nesting place for the threatened yellow-footed plover . For this reason, among other things , the park has been declared an Important Bird Area . The waters along the coast are home to the American eel , which is also considered an endangered species in Canada. Endangered mammals are the bat species Little Brown Bat ( Myotis lucifugus ) and Northern Long-Eared Bat ( Nyctophilus arnhemensis ), endangered plant species of the Beach Pineweed ( Lechea maritima ) and the Gulf of St. Lawrence Aster ( Symphyotrichum laurentianum ).

The park's main attraction is Green Gables , a 19th-century farm that inspired Lucy Maud Montgomery 's children's book Anne on Green Gables .
