The St. Lawrence Gulf ( English Gulf of Saint Lawrence , French Golfe du Saint-Laurent ) is located at the outflow of the St. Lawrence River into the Atlantic and is the largest estuary on earth.

It is bounded by the Labrador Peninsula in the north, Newfoundland in the northeast, the Gaspé peninsula in the southwest and New Brunswick , Nova Scotia and Cape Breton Island in the south .

In the west, the Gulf of Saint Lawrence could be demarcated from the confluence of the Saint Lawrence River at its narrowing east of Matane .

Straits of the Sea

The Gulf is still connected to the Atlantic by two roads :

  • Belle Isle Strait - between Labrador Peninsula and Newfoundland
  • Cabot Strait - between Newfoundland and Cape Breton Island
  • Strait of Canso - between Cape Breton Island and Nova Scotia, 1 km wide. After the completion of the Canso Causeway in 1955, there is no longer any free exchange of water between the Gulf and the Atlantic at this point.
