The Davis Strait ( English Davis Strait , Danish Davisstrædet ) is the strait between the Canadian Baffin Island and Greenland . It connects the Labrador Sea with Baffin Bay . It is 700 km long and 300 km wide, making it one of the widest straits in the world. The largest town on the Davis Strait is Sisimiut , the second largest city in Greenland.
At the end of the fjord Kangerlussuaq, which is more than 170 km long and 1.5 to 8 km wide, navigable along its entire length, the town of the same name and its international airport can be reached.
history
Around the year 1000, Leif Eriksson was the first European to cross it in a westerly direction, whereupon he discovered Vinland . In 1585 it was used for the first time in modern times by the English navigator John Davis . Today it bears his name.
