The Wellington Channel is a strait in the Qikiqtaaluk region of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago . It runs between the islands of Cornwallis Island and Devon Island .
The Strait of the Sea was discovered by William Edward Parry on August 22, 1819 and named after the general and politician Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington . John Franklin advanced to 77 degrees N on the Channel in 1845 when ice forced him to turn back. The first systematic exploration of the canal took place in 1851 by William Penny as part of the search expedition for the missing Franklin.
