history

George Back reached Simpson Strait in 1834. However, he did not name it.

In 1836 the Hudson's Bay Company commissioned Thomas Simpson and Peter Warren Dease to complete the exploration and mapping of the north coast of North America. These reached the Simpson Strait in 1839 and gave it its current name.

Roald Amundsen sailed the strait in 1903 during his first successful Northwest Passage .
