Roes Welcome Sound is a strait of the Arctic Ocean in the Kivalliq region of Nunavut in Canada .

It separates the island of Southampton Island , which belongs to the Canadian Arctic archipelago , from the western mainland. The width of the strait varies between 24 and 113 km. The length of the Roes Welcome Sound is 290 km.

The Roes Welcome Sound opens south to Hudson Bay . Wager Bay lies on the west bank of the canal . To the north, the Frozen Strait and Repulse Bay join.

The Strait of the Sea is named after Sir Thomas Roe , a friend of the polar explorer Luke Fox and a financier of his Arctic voyage in 1631.

A bowhead whale migration route leads through the Roes Welcome Sound .
