Thomas Roe
Sir Thomas Roe (around 1581 - November 6, 1644 ) was an English diplomat .
Life
After studying at Oxford, he became Esquire of Queen Elizabeth I of England . On July 23, 1603, he was at the coronation of King James I of this to the Knights defeated. He accompanied Princess Elisabeth Stuart , who married the Elector Friedrich V of the Palatinate (also known as the "Winter King" of Bohemia ), on her bridal trip to Heidelberg.
From 1615 to 1619 Roe was the ambassador of the English king at the Mughal court in India and tried to conclude trade agreements there. Because of his good relationship with Jahangir , he managed to secure a trade agreement with extensive freedoms for the British East India Company in India trade .
From 1621 to 1629 he served as England's ambassador to the Ottoman Empire , where he also safeguarded the interests of the English Levant Company . In the following years until 1640 he fulfilled other diplomatic missions on the European mainland.
The strait of the Roes Welcome Sound in the northwest of Hudson Bay (Canada) was named after Thomas Roe .
