Dictionary of National Biography

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Dictionary of National Biography ( DNB ) and the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography ( ODNB ) are the two authoritative British national biographies . The length of the respective entries varies, but they are sometimes very extensive.

Dictionary of National Biography

The Dictionary of National Biography appeared from 1885 to 1900 and comprised 63 volumes. Volumes 1 to 26 were edited by Leslie Stephen (from volume 22 together with Sidney Lee ); from volume 27, Lee was the sole editor. From 1901 Lee began with supplement volumes that contained biographical articles on over 1000 "missing persons" who had died between 1885 and January 1901. In the years 1908–1909 an improved new edition of the Dictionary of National Biography took place under Lee's supervision .

After the publication of further supplement volumes in the years 1912–1996, the complete Dictionary of National Biography was also published on CD-ROM in 1996 . Christine Nicholls , who was editor of the supplement volumes in the 1990s, became particularly well known .

Oxford Dictionary of National Biography

Work on the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography began in 1992 with the appointment of Colin Matthew as editor of the new national biography . When Matthew passed away in 1999, his position was passed on to Brian Harrison . The extensive work was published in 2004 by Oxford University Press in 60 volumes ( ISBN 0-19-861411-X ) and online. In addition to personal and institutional subscribers , the online version is also accessible to most UK public library users by entering their user number.

A small team of scientists at the University of Oxford has been expanding the ODNB with additional online articles since 2005. The ODNB thus currently comprises over 60,000 personal articles and over 500 themed articles. Several online articles have also been updated since their publication in 2004 and are listed in an update overview. In 2007 the project received a Queen's Anniversary Prize and in 2008 a podcast was released that now comprises over 250 episodes.

Sir David Cannadine has been the chief editor of the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography since 2014 .
