The Byam Channel (German Byam Canal ) is a strait in the Kitikmeot region of Nunavut Province in the Canadian-Arctic Archipelago . It runs between the east coast of Melville Island and Byam Martin Island . The canal, which is around 27 km wide at its narrowest point, connects the Viscount-Melville Sound in the south with the Byam Martin Channel in the north.
On October 30, 1974, the crash of Panarctic Oils Flight 416 occurred on the icy surface of the canal , in which 32 of the 34 people on board died and the aircraft went down.
