The Kluane National Park ( kluː'ɑːniː ; English Kluane National Park and Reserve of Canada , French Parc national et réserve de parc national du Canada Kluane ) is a Canadian national park located in the southwest of the Yukon and founded in 1976 with an area of 22,016 km². The highest mountain in the country belongs to it: Mount Logan ( 5959  m ). 82 percent of its area is covered by the Kluane Icefield and the glaciers it feeds. Kluane Lake borders the national park in the northeast . The park is the fourth largest in Canada and the largest in the Yukon. The park is an IUCN Category II ( National Park ) protected area managed by Parks Canada , a Crown Agency (federal agency). Unlike most other Canadian national parks, it has the addition of reserve . It arises from other rights of use for the local indigenous peoples .

In 1979 the park, together with the US Wrangell-St.-Elias National Park , was declared a cross-border world natural heritage by UNESCO . This world natural heritage was supplemented in 1992 by the US Glacier Bay National Park and in 1994 by the Canadian Tatshenshini-Alsek Provincial Park .

Surname

The name was derived from Lu'An Mün, a word of Tutchonen means the "lake with many fish."

activities

Mountain biking is possible on some paths and the park is a paradise for hikers, for whom there are paths and routes of different lengths and levels of difficulty. Paths are mostly laid out, well marked, some with bridges, it is relatively easy to follow them and some there are primitive campsites. Routes describe a rough hiking direction and demand a lot more from the hiker because of the differences in altitude and river crossings.
