Kluane Icefield and Mount Augusta |
The Kluane Icefield (sometimes also Kluane Icecap ) is located in the Canadian Yukon Territory and, after the Bagley Icefield, is the largest contiguous glacier ice field outside of the polar regions.
The Kluane Icefield is part of the Kluane National Park and is located between Mount Logan , Mount Saint Elias and Mount Saint Mary . Parts of the ice field are the Hubbard Glacier , the Saint Elias Icefield and the Kaskawulsh Glacier . The glaciers feed, among other things, the tributaries of the Alsek River towards the south ( Pacific ), and the Donjek and White River towards the north.
In summer, temperatures vary between +15 ° C during the day and −15 ° C at night. There can be up to 30 cm of fresh snow in summer. In winter from the beginning of August to the beginning of May, up to 15 m of fresh snow is added each year. The ice is partially 1000 m thick.
