The Akami-Uapishkᵁ-KakKasuak-Mealy-Mountains National Park ( English Akami-Uapishkᵁ-KakKasuak-Mealy Mountains National Park Reserve ; French Réserve de parc national Akami-Uapishkᵁ – KakKasuak – Monts Mealy ) is a Canadian national park in the province of Newfoundland and Labradland . The park area covers an area of 10,700 km². The park, located east of Happy Valley-Goose Bay in the Labrador region , was established in 2015, together with Qausuittuq National Park and Rouge National Urban Park . It is currently one of the three newest national parks in Canada . Unlike most of the other Canadian national parks, it is one of the nine parks currently designated as reserve . This addition results from other usage rights for the local indigenous peoples .
The park is bordered to the northwest by Hamilton Inlet and to the northeast by the Labrador Sea . The park is dominated by the Mealy Mountains , which are also eponymous for the park. The landscape in the park is characterized by boreal coniferous forest . Herds of the Canadian forest caribou , a forest subspecies of the caribou, live there .
The park is an IUCN Category II ( National Park ) protected area .
