history
In the summer of 1941, Eric Fry, an employee of the Canadian Department of Mines and Resources , selected a large area on the Goose River on behalf of the Royal Canadian Air Force to build a new air base. Shortly after the decision was made, the air base was built within five months. Goose Bay Air Base became an important base where planes made a stopover to be refueled during World War II .
The first settlers came from the coastal regions of Labrador. They were hired by the McNamara Construction Company and built the air base. For these settlers a city was founded, which was about 8 km from the air base. The town was originally called Refugee Cove and was renamed Happy Valley in 1955 .
