The Cape Breton Highlands National Park ( English Cape Breton Highlands National Park , French Parc national du Canada des Hautes-Terres-du-Cap-Breton ) is located in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia in the north of the Cape Breton Island . The Cape Breton Highlands is named after the plateau . A section of the Cabot Trail leads through the park and impresses with spectacular views of the ocean and the adjacent mountains. The park was Canada's first national park in the Atlantic provinces. The park is an IUCN Category II (National Park) protected area .
The Acadian village of Chéticamp on the Gulf of Saint Lawrence is located at the western entrance to the park . There is also an information center in the village. On the east side is the village of Ingonish with its white sandy beaches on the Atlantic Ocean . In between there are mountains, valleys, forests, waterfalls, rocky coast and a tundra- like highlands.

The wildlife of the national park can come up with moose , black bears and bald eagles . But whales and northern gannets can also be observed from the coastal trails. The park's forests are also home to the Bicknell's Thrush .
The park is characterized by the boreal forests that cover the high plateau. But especially in autumn, the many deciduous trees stand out when the Indian summer begins.

A variety of activities are possible in Cape Breton Highlands National Park. In addition to hiking (25 hiking trails), camping, swimming and fishing, geocaching has also been possible since 2009 . In the Highlands Links Golf Course golfers find their field of activity.
Events in the park
On October 27, 2009, 19-year-old Canadian singer Taylor Mitchell was attacked and fatally injured by coyotes in the park while hiking the Skyline Trail .
