On October 27, 2009, Mitchell hiked the Skyline Trail alone in the afternoon in Cape Breton Highlands National Park in Nova Scotia.

During her migration she was attacked by two coyotes. During the attack, other hikers came to Mitchell's aid, drove away the animals and alerted the police. When rescue workers arrived, Mitchell was taken to Cheticamp Hospital and then airlifted to the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Center in Halifax in critical condition. She died that night.

According to the police, the officers encountered two "extremely aggressive" coyotes on the spot. When a police officer shot one of the animals, the animals fled.

An officer from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police later shot a coyote in the park, but the officer was unable to find the animal. In the evening, another coyote was killed by employees of the park administration. It is believed that five or six coyotes live in the area of the park.
