The Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park is the union of Waterton Lakes National Park in Canada with the Glacier National Park in the United States . Both parks were declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1976 and 1979, and a World Heritage Site in 1995 .

The merger of the two national parks came about in 1932 through the members of the Rotary Club from Alberta and Montana . It was the first peace park in the world, an international "peace park ". It is supposed to symbolize friendship and peace between the two countries. There are efforts to establish more parks between the US and Mexico .

The park has a size of 4,572 km² and is located in southwest Alberta and northwest Montana, on the east side of the Rocky Mountains and on the western edge of the North American prairie . In the park there are steppes , forests , alpine mountains and glaciers and a large number of plants and mammals. It is the core of the Crown of the Continent Ecosystem , a major ecosystem in the Rocky Mountains in both states, far beyond the national parks.
