Claus Westermann

Claus Westermann (born October 7, 1909 in Berlin ; † June 11, 2000 in Heidelberg ) was a German Protestant theologian and pastor who taught the Old Testament in Berlin and Heidelberg .

Life

Claus Westermann studied theology at the universities of Tübingen , Marburg and Berlin . In Tübingen he became a member of the AV Igel student association . In 1933 he passed the first theological exam at the Evangelical Consistory in Berlin .

Then the vicariate followed, initially in Arnswalde . At this point he was already a member of the Confessing Church . In Berlin, he entered the under Martin Niemoller resulting seminary of the Confessing Church one. With other vicars he later switched to the Naumburg seminary under Gerhard Gloege . He was arrested several times by the Gestapo . 1940–45 he did military service and from 1945–46 was a Soviet prisoner of war , during which he began his studies of the Old Testament with a Luther Bible .

From 1946 to 1952 Westermann was pastor in Berlin, including at the Burckhardthaus, and since 1949 at the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church as a pastor.

In Zurich he was in 1949 when Walther Zimmerli Theodor (1907-1983) with his work Praising God in the Psalms to Dr. theol. PhD. He was then a lecturer at the Church University in Berlin , and from 1954 he held a professorship. From 1958 to 1978 he was a full professor for Old Testament theology at the University of Heidelberg until he retired in 1978 . Rainer Albertz is one of his students .
