Georg Fohrer

Georg Fohrer (born September 6, 1915 in Krefeld , † December 4, 2002 in Jerusalem ) was a German Protestant theologian and full professor of Old Testament science .

Life

Georg Fohrer studied Protestant theology and comparative religious studies at the universities of Marburg and Bonn from 1934 to 1938 . The doctorate to Dr. phil. took place in 1939 ( The holy way. A study of religious studies. Düsseldorf 1939), to the Dr. theol. 1944 ( The symbolic acts of the Old Testament prophets. ). Fohrer completed his habilitation in 1949, lectured in Marburg and was appointed adjunct professor in 1954. From 1954 to 1962 he held a teaching position at the Evangelical Theological Faculty of the University of Vienna . In 1962 he was offered a professorship at the University of Erlangen , where he stayed until his retirement in 1979.

After his retirement, Fohrer converted to Judaism and lived in Jerusalem, where he died in 2002 after a long and serious illness.

Fohrer was honorary doctor of the Universities of Marburg, Aberdeen and St Andrews and an honorary member of numerous learned societies. In addition to his publications, which have been translated into several languages, Fohrer was also (co-) editor of the Zurich Bible Commentaries, the Theological Real Encyclopedia and the Journal for Old Testament Studies (ZAW). The latter had suffered greatly in its reputation under the editorship of Johannes Hempel during the National Socialist era.
