Kurt Galling

Kurt Franz Willi Galling (born January 8, 1900 in Wilhelmshaven ; † July 12, 1987 in Tübingen ) was a German theologian. From 1951 to 1952 he was rector of the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz .

Life

The son of a marine engineer passed his matriculation exams and Hebraicum in 1917 . In 1918 he began studying theology at the Berlin Friedrich Wilhelms University . After a brief assignment during the First World War in Belgium , he continued his studies in Berlin and Jena . In Jena he became a member of the Black Castle Bund - connection Alemannia . In Jena he was awarded a Lic. Theol. doctorate , with a thesis on the Old Testament , in 1922 he passed the first theological exam. Galling then studied classical archeology and received his doctorate in 1923. phil. From 1924 to 1928 he was an assistant at the Institutum Judaicum of the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität, in 1925 he qualified as a professor in the subject of the Old Testament . In 1928 Galling became senior assistant at the theological seminar at the University of Halle , where he was appointed associate professor in 1930. Between 1926 and 1938 Galling was excavation director in Palestine several times . In 1930 he was acting head of the Palestine Institute in Jerusalem . In 1934 he received an honorary theological doctorate in Bern .

In October 1933 Galling joined the SA , in November 1934 he left for health reasons. From 1934 he worked as a subordinate of the teaching staff. On January 1, 1940, he was accepted into the NSDAP ( member no. 8.292.216), he was also a member of the NSLB and the Reich Air Protection Association .

In 1939 Galling volunteered for the Wehrmacht and was employed as a ballistics instructor . In 1940 he returned to the university, in 1943 he was drafted into the Wehrmacht again and worked as an auxiliary customs assistant in Trzebinia ( Upper Silesia ). Dismissed from the University of Halle in 1945, Galling continued to work for a short time in the library of the Theological Seminary. Although he was declared "politically acceptable" by the anti-fascist committee of the city of Halle in 1946 , he did not return to the university there.

Galling therefore accepted a call to Mainz in 1946 , where he worked as full professor for the Old Testament and Palestinian archeology. 1951/52 he worked here as rector. In 1955 he followed a call to Göttingen , from 1962 he was professor of biblical archeology at the University of Tübingen . Galling retired from Tübingen in 1968 .

Galling was a member of the American Society of Biblical Literature and Exegesis , the German Archaeological Institute in Rome and the German Palestine Association for the Exploration of Palestine .
