Ludwig von Herterich (born October 13, 1856 in Ansbach , † December 25, 1932 in Etzenhausen, today in Dachau ), until 1908 Ludwig Herterich , was a German painter and art teacher . He achieved importance primarily as a portraitist and monumental painter and was a leading representative of the Munich School .

Life

Ludwig Herterich was the son of the sculptor and restorer Franz Herterich and the younger brother of Johann Caspar Herterich . In 1872 he moved to Munich and took lessons from his brother and Wilhelm von Diez . From 1873 he studied in the sculpture class of the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . Later he was a teacher of the painting class at the Munich Ladies Academy , from 1896 professor (successor to Jakob Grünenwald ) at the Stuttgart Art School and then from 1898 professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. Among other things, Herterich played a key role in the visual design of Wolfsbrunn Castle in the Ore Mountains .

Ludwig von Herterich was a member of the Munich Secession and the German Association of Artists . He took part in the first exhibition of the Künstlerbund in 1904 in the State Collection of Antiquities in Munich with the double portrait of Professor Littmann and his daughter .

In 1908 he was honored for his services with the Maximilian Order and in connection with it was raised to the personal nobility.
