Life

Jakob Grünenwald was the eighth child of the contract weaver and smallholder Johann Georg Grünenwald and his wife Rosina. In 1840 he began his training as a history painter with Bernhard von Neher and Johann Friedrich Dietrich at the Royal Art School in Stuttgart , where he preferred to deal with religious subjects.

In 1853 he moved to Munich , the seat of the famous Munich Academy and then an artistic stronghold, where he worked with other compatriots such as Carl Ebert, Anton Braith and Albert Kappis and with Munich artists such as Carl Spitzweg . In 1855 he married Maria Dorothea Rapp from Stuttgart.

Grünenwald received various public commissions and was represented in numerous exhibitions throughout Germany until 1881, for example in Dresden , Berlin and in the Munich Glass Palace . During his time in Munich he devoted himself mainly to genre painting and created most of his well-known works.

When interest in his work in Munich sank, he was appointed professor at the Stuttgart Art School in 1877 through the mediation of his former teacher Neher, so that his livelihood was secured. Grünenwald worked there as head of the drawing class until his death; his students included u. a. Karl Bauer , Karl Hartmann, Georg Jauss and Hermann Pleuer . As a member of the committee of the “Association for Christian Art in the Evangelical Church of Württemberg”, he exerted influence on contemporary religious art, which was also the focus of his commissioned work during this time. Grünenwald was buried in section 6 of the Prague cemetery in Stuttgart in a grave with a simple rock.

Create

For a long time Grünenwald was forgotten as a painter, although he was very popular during his lifetime and some of his genre pictures ( The landlady , the Swabian bride and groom receives the grandmother's blessing ) were widely used as steel engravings .

It was not until the 1980s, when genre paintings were enjoying greater popularity again, that Grünenwald was rediscovered. The most extensive, publicly accessible collection of his works is located in the City Museum Göppingen im Storchen. He is also represented with works in the Landesmuseum Württemberg . The Grünenwald memorial in the former town hall of Ebersbach-Bünzwangen is expanding its property through constant acquisitions. For a better presentation, it has been decided to move the growing collection to the Ebersbach city museum "Alte Post" on the artist's 200th birthday.
