Hermann Pleuer

Hermann Pleuer (born April 5, 1863 in Schwäbisch Gmünd , † January 6, 1911 in Stuttgart ) was a Swabian impressionist and landscape painter . He is best known for his railway pictures of the Royal Württemberg State Railways .

Hermann Pleuer was born as the son of a gold goods manufacturer. After attending the Stuttgart School of Applied Arts (1879–1881) and the Stuttgart Art Academy (1881–1883), he studied at the Academy in Munich. In 1886 he returned to Stuttgart and was initially noticed as a bohemian , he created pictures of bohemian artists and night pictures (female nudes in the moonlight) as well as landscape pictures, before he turned to railroad painting, fascinated by the technical development of industrialization and the "intoxication of speed" . Pleuer found financial support from the patron Freiherr von Fachsenfeld . He died of pulmonary tuberculosis at the age of 47.

Hermann Pleuer was a member of the German Association of Artists . Along with Otto Reiniger , Christian Landenberger and Heinrich von Zügel, he is one of the most important representatives of Impressionism in southern Germany.

The Pleuer-Passage in Schwäbisch Gmünd train station has been named after Hermann Pleuer since 2014.
