Gustav Richard Schneeli (born November 12, 1872 in Zurich ; † May 23, 1944 there ; entitled to live in Mühlehorn ) was a Swiss art historian , diplomat , genealogist and painter .

life and work

Gustav Schneeli was the son of the wealthy timber merchant Eduard Schneeli and Emma, ​​nee Berri. Financially independent throughout his life, he studied philosophy , history and art history with Jacob Burckhardt at the University of Basel . In 1896 he received his doctorate in Zurich on the subject of "Renaissance in Switzerland". Schneeli later studied law .

In 1905 Schneeli began to devote himself to painting and trained as a painter under Ludwig von Herterich in Paris and Rome, where he was also attaché to the Swiss embassy, ​​and in the winter of 1908 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . As a painter, he was committed to symbolism . Schneeli was president of the Munich section of the Society of Swiss Painters, Sculptors and Architects and from 1914 to 1918 he was active in the "welfare of prisoners of war". In 1931 Schneeli moved to Paris. He was the editor of the Swiss Gender Book and the Genealogical Handbook on Swiss History . Schneeli was the founder of the Kunsthaus Glarus and the owner of the castle in Vuippens .
