Kunsthaus Glarus
The Kunsthaus Glarus is a museum and exhibition center in Glarus , in the immediate vicinity of the train station in the Volksgarten.
history
Gustav Schneeli , son of a wealthy Glarus timber merchant dynasty, art historian, diplomat, genealogist and painter, wrote to the Glarner Kunstverein, which was founded in 1870, that he was planning to build a museum for his pictures. So they planned a joint building, a cultural attraction in a small town, which should also attract big city dwellers. On the occasion of an exhibition in Geneva , Schneeli wrote:
- [My pictures] could occupy a small hall by themselves, which again showed me how important it is for me to exhibit for myself and not be affected by my colleagues' products, as my [pictures] are generally much more discreet than they are today it is common not to be in tune with others.
Planning was carried out with the Kunstverein for many years, and in 1952, eight years after Schneeli's death, the building by the architect Hans Leuzinger was opened. Part of the museum was intended for the Schneeli collection, while exhibition rooms for the natural history collection of the Canton of Glarus were provided in the basement.
collection
The museum's collection includes paintings and sculptures by Swiss artists from the late 19th and 20th centuries, as well as the collections of Othmar Huber , Gustav Schneeli and Gustav Egger.
Exhibitions
For more than 40 years, the exhibitions were held by members of the Kunstverein, only in 1992 a conservator was hired to be responsible for the exhibition program.
In recent years the Kunsthaus Glarus has made a name for itself with contemporary art by Swiss and foreign artists (such as Hanspeter Hofmann ). In addition to contemporary art, exhibitions with a historical background or parts of the collection of the art association are shown again and again. Every year the museum also offers artists from the region the opportunity to present their works of art. The «home visits» are a special kind of exhibition. Works of art from the collection are exhibited at residents' homes and shown to a larger audience in guided tours.
