Karel Liška

Karel Liška (born April 2, 1914 in Poltava , Ukraine , then in Russia , † 1987 in Daisendorf ) was a Czech painter of realistic pictures. In addition, with the help of his gift of synaesthesia or synopsis while listening to pieces of music, he created abstract images (“ photisms ”). In his early work he also painted portraits and stage sets.

Life

Liška's parents (virtuoso and opera singer) fled to Prague after the First World War . There he passed his Abitur in 1932 and studied at the Technical University and Charles University until 1937 . After 1937 he was an art teacher, music consultant and professor at the State Graphic Art School. In 1948 he was dismissed for political reasons after the communist seizure of power. After 1953 he was allowed to teach at a school again. In the summer of 1969 he emigrated after the crackdown on the Prague Spring because of his uncertain personal future. Since the summer of 1969 he was an art teacher at the advanced high school in Meersburg and lived in Daisendorf near Meersburg.

Karel Liška is the father of the Czech-German ballet dancer Ivan Liška , who was born in Prague in 1950 and is the director of the Bavarian State Ballet .

Commemoration

An unpolished natural tombstone on the south side of the New Cemetery in Daisendorf reminds of him. When the visibility is good, you can see the Lake Constance and pre-alpine landscape from there, as in some of his pictures.

Artistic work

In 1937 the Czech Ministry of Culture bought a landscape from the Eagle Mountains. This was followed by exhibitions, stage sets and book illustrations. After the Second World War he was one of the 122 founding members of the new ČSSR artists' association . His post-war exhibitions included pictures from Bulgaria in Prague, pictures from the ČSSR in Stockholm , pictures from France and the ČSSR in Luleå, and pictures from Sweden in Prague. From 1970 he showed Lake Constance pictures in the New Castle (Meersburg) , "Music Pictures" in Constance, and he had exhibitions in Switzerland, Sweden, France and Liechtenstein.

The pictures seagulls convey a special landscape harmony ; Meersburg ; On the Wattenberg . The abstract music picture Beethoven: Ode to Joy is also remarkable . The list of pictures for the exhibition “In memoriam Prof. Karel Liška” from May 9, 1997 to September 28, 1997 in the town hall of Daisendorf still comprised 93 oil paintings, watercolors, linocuts, lithographs, etchings and drawings.

His painting Staircase to a City Gate was put up for auction. The pictures Shore Mood at Lake Constance , Large Flock of Sheep and Shepherds in the Field , Summer Day in the Country were sold by various auction houses.

Artistic creed

His credo was: to find the eternal in nature, to feel and express a sense of harmony and beauty. His pictures range from old masters to expressionistic.
