The Hofbuchdruckerei Greiner und Pfeiffer (also: Greiner & Pfeiffer, Hofdruckerei and Verlagbuchhandlung ) was a printing company in the Baden-Württemberg state capital Stuttgart . The company specialized in art prints and newspaper -Beileger, accidents ( catalogs ), bookplates and calendar .

Company history

The print shop was founded between 1841 and 1843 by Ernst Greiner in "Immenhofer Weg" (today: "Heusteigstraße"). The trained book printer first opened a book printer. In 1845 he incorporated a publishing bookstore. The small business employed four assistants in the first few years. By the late 1850s there were already twenty.

From the 1860s the company was renamed several times. It was initially called the royal court book printer , later Greiner's court book printer . After his long-time employee and son-in-law Carl August Pfeiffer joined the company as a partner and technical manager, it operated as the Greiner und Pfeiffer Hofbuchdruckerei from 1885 . In 1894 the company moved into the first large new factory building, which had been designed and built by the architects Bihl & Woltz at the confluence of Mozartstrasse and Christophstrasse in Stuttgart. The Dehio manual counts the building of the architects' association among the outstanding (to be preserved) buildings in Stuttgart.

In 1900 the print shop was converted into a KG . By 1910, 38 high-speed presses and one rotary machine were in operation. The company had 350 workers. The steam engines used came from the production of the Berger company G. Kuhn .

A prominent author for Greiner & Pfeiffer was Karl von Gerok . His “Palm Leaves”, “Flowers and Stars”, “On Lonely Aisles”, “Peonies”, “Memories of the Youth”, “Under the Evening Star” and a number of sermon books were published by this publisher. Another author was Paul Steinmüller , whose works “The Rhapsodies of Joy”, “The Rhapsodies of Life”, “The Rhapsodies of the Lost Kingdom”, “The Savior”, “Solitude”, “From Time and Eternity”, “The Songs of the Coming ”,“ The Novella Wreath of a Love ”,“ The Seven Legends of Contemplation ”,“ The Ten Virgins Play ”and“ When Sorrow went and joy came ”in sometimes very high editions (250,000 for“ The Rhapsodies of the Joy ”) were published. In 1922 the company was called Verlagsanstalt Greiner & Pfeiffer .

In 1916, the Württemberg gas meter factory J. Braun acquired the company premises, which went bankrupt in 1932. The buildings are almost unchanged today.
