Wilhelm Theopold

Wilhelm Theopold (born December 12, 1915 in Lage (Lippe) ; † January 28, 2009 ) was a German pediatrician , medical professional politician and medical journalist .

Live and act

Born in 1915 in Lage / Lippe, Wilhelm Theopold studied medicine from 1935, interrupted by military service, until 1942. During his studies in 1938 he became a member of the Alemannia Marburg fraternity . Immediately after the state examination, he received his doctorate, after which Wilhelm Theopold worked as a military doctor until 1945. From 1945 to 1956 he worked at the University Children's Hospital in Marburg, and in 1948 he was recognized as a pediatric doctor.

After completing his habilitation in 1956, he became the head physician in the children's department at the Lemgo Hospital, and in 1957 returned to Hesse as chief physician at the Böttcherstrasse children's hospital in Frankfurt / Main. In 1958 he was also appointed head of the children's department of the municipal hospital in Frankfurt / Main-Hoechst, where he worked in the newly built children's clinic until his retirement in 1980.

Theopold was one of the doctors who founded the Marburger Bund in 1947 , and was first chairman in Marburg in 1949 and then in 1956 of the Hesse State Association of the Marburger Bund. From 1960 to 1964 Wilhelm Theopold was deputy chairman of the professional association of paediatricians in Germany.

From 1956 to 1964 he was Vice President, then until 1968 President of the State Medical Association of Hesse and a member of the Board of Directors of the German Medical Association . In this context, he significantly shaped the preventive examination programs, especially for children, which were adopted by the statutory health insurance three years later, in 1971, at the 71st German Medical Congress in 1968.

Wilhelm Theopold was the editor of the "Hessischer Ärzteblatt" from 1958 to 1998, from 1970 to 1974 head of the medical and scientific editorial team of the "Deutscher Ärzteblatt" and from 1982 president of the Federal Association of German Writers and Doctors for many years.
