Ililai is an East Timorese village and the Suco surrounding it in the Lautém administrative office ( Lautém municipality ). The Suco is a center of the national language Makasae in the municipality .

Place name

In 1936 Ililai was renamed Nova Âncora by the Portuguese . But the name did not catch on and a few years after the Second World War , the old name was reverted to. Sometimes the place is also called Laivai , after the Dasidara river , which bears this name in its upper reaches.

The place

The place Ililai is on the coast at sea level, on the east bank of the Dasidara River (Laivai). Districts are Vaniria ( Waniria ), Barliu and Borubatu ( Barubatu ). In the neighboring Suco Euquisi there are Aldeias with these names.

In the 1930s, district administrator Armando Eduardo Pinto Correia and the Escola de Reino de Laivai established one of the so-called Pinto Correia schools . Today it is in ruins.

Today the settlement center includes a primary school, a medical post and a bridge over the Dasidara, over which the northern coastal road leads. It is one of the most important transport routes in the country.

Ililai is located in the far west of the Lautém administrative office. Here the Dasidara flows into the Strait of Wetar . Most of the sucos is west of the river, only the small piece with the settlement center Ililai at the river mouth is on the east bank. To the east is the Suco Euquisi. At the southern tip of Ililai, where Dasidara, here called Laivai, swings to the north when coming from the west and the Abuti meets it, on the other bank is the Luro administrative office with its Suco Wairoque . In the west lies the administrative office of Laga (municipality of Baucau ) with its Suco Saelari . The border river here is the Lalubuilana . Before the 2015 territorial reform, Ililai had an area of 42.11 km². Now there are 42.41 km², as the border to Suco Euquisi, which previously ran across the settlement center of Ililai, was moved a little to the southeast.

On the west bank of the Dasidara is the place Samalari (Makasae for " banyan tree ") and in the south of the Sucos the village of Titilari . The two Aldeias in Suco Ililai bear the names of these places.
