In June 1863 an uprising of the Makasae of Laga was suppressed by the Portuguese and the village burned down. The leader of the 1861 rebellion was captured in Laclo . In August 1867, the inhabitants of the Galoli Empire of Vemasse , to which Laga belonged, rebelled . This rebellion also failed.
When Laga was occupied by the Indonesians in December 1975 , the population fled to the forests. The Indonesian soldiers killed the cattle, stole food supplies and burned houses. At the end of 1979 there was an Indonesian camp for East Timorese in Laga, who should be relocated by the occupiers for better control. There were other so-called transit camps in Atelari and Saelari. In August 1978, four East Timorese civilians were arrested by Indonesian soldiers on Mount Tokegua , near Samagata . They had left their refugee camp in search of food, but did not have a permit. One person was at one-Bu'u killed another in Uasagia and a third in Cotamutu ( District loud). In 1997, resistance fighters shot grenades at an Indonesian military truck in Laga, killing 18 soldiers.
In early July 2010, a flood destroyed around 1000 hectares of rice fields. 400 households were affected.
Laga is considered to be the home of many members of the paramilitary Konseilu Revolusionariu Maupe (KRM, German Revolutionary Council Maupe ). Several incidents with the KRM occurred here. In November 2013, KRM members violated the general ban on civilians wearing military uniforms during a march on the Laga football field. In February 2014 there was an exchange of fire with KRM members during a police action in Lalulai . A policeman was injured by a Molotov cocktail. On March 3, the KRM was declared illegal. On March 10, KRM members erected a blockade on the road to Baucau . One person was injured by an explosive device that was thrown. The KRM leadership surrendered to the authorities on March 14, but was released in December 2014. In January 2015, the KRM took two police officers hostage in Laga and wounded two others. Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão personally drove to Laga in a convoy and negotiated the release of the hostages. KRM leader Mauk Moruk fled with his people into the jungle.
