The National Bureau of Statistics  ( NSO ) was established on June 30, 2000 , when East Timor was still under the administration of the United Nations ( UNTAET ). The United Nations  Development Program (UNDP) financed the establishment. In the early days, the focus was primarily on the consumer price index. At that time, 16 foreign and local workers were working for the NSO in the GPA building . In 2001 the second interim government reduced the NSO to eight employees. The management moved to the Prime Minister's office in the government palace. It was subordinate to the Ministry of Economic Affairs. With the release of East Timor into independence, the NSO came under the sovereignty of the Ministry of Finance and also moved into the Kobe Building . The first director of the NSO was Manuel Mendonça, who now had 16 employees and, with David Brackfield, a foreign consultant. The International Monetary Fund took over the financing . On September 5, 2003, the authority was renamed the Direcção Nacional de Estatística (DNE) and moved into its current premises in Caicoli . The United Nations  Population Fund (UNFPA) financed the renovation of the two warehouses that housed the Statistical Office during the Indonesian occupation of East Timor. The DNE was subordinate to the Directorate General for Analysis and Research of the East Timorese Ministry of Finance.

In August 2009 the DNE had 18 permanent and 48 temporary employees. The director of the DNE was Elias dos Santos Ferreira. Since December 2013, General Manager António Freitas has been the new boss.

In 2004 and 2010 the DNE carried out national censuses . The DGE carried out the last census in 2015 with over 5000 employees. A mascot in the form of a crocodile was new for public relations .
