Gympie is a city in the Australian state of Queensland with 10,933 inhabitants. It is located about 160 km north of Brisbane at an altitude of about 95 m on the Mary River .
After gold was found in 1867, the gold rush town of Gympie emerged in the pasture settlements north of Brisbane. It is said that the discovery saved the bankrupt state of Queensland.
Around 99 tons of gold had been mined by 1925. Then the place switched to agriculture, especially cattle and dairy farming determine the city's income. Gympie is the administrative seat of the Gympie Regional Council, newly created in 2008 .
