James "Jimmy" Downey (born October 10, 1987 in Gympie , Queensland ) is an Australian football player .

Career

Downey first attended the Queensland Sports Institute before training at the Australian Institute of Sport from 2005 to 2006 . In March 2007 he received a professional contract from the A-League team Perth Glory and was a regular player in his debut season. After the end of the season he extended his contract with Perth for two more seasons. Due to injury problems in preparation for the 2009/10 season, Downey, who was mainly called up as a right defender, lost his place in the team after two years and was only used sporadically. In early 2010 he went to league rivals North Queensland Fury in exchange for Daniel McBreen for the final days of the game .

For the 2010/11 season he moved to the Dutch second division club Sparta Rotterdam . For this he played a total of three competitive matches at the start of the season, but due to long-term injury problems, the club and the players agreed on January 1, 2011 to prematurely terminate the one-year contract. Downey returned to Australia and joined the Oakleigh Cannons with play in the Victorian Premier League . For the 2011/12 season he signed with the New Zealand A-League club Wellington Phoenix . There he came to only seven appearances as a substitute in two years until his contract expired. Shortly after the start of the 2011/12 season, he was out for several months due to a knee injury and he was unable to contest the preparation for the 2012/13 season due to knee problems.

His knee problems also resulted in a longer break from football. It was only in early 2015 that he joined the Ballarat Red Devils , a club in the second division of the state of Victoria. He had already completed rehabilitation measures at the club for a year.

In 2006, Downey took part as a regular with the Australian U-20 team in the U-19 Asian Cup, but missed qualifying for the World Cup with the team due to a 2-1 defeat in the quarter-finals against South Korea.
