The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS; Australian Sports Institute ) is an educational and training institute in Australia that aims to promote top-class sport . It supports athletes in numerous sports and trains coaches. Both Olympic and non-Olympic sports are promoted.

The headquarters are in the Bruce district of the capital, Canberra , on 65 hectares with numerous sports facilities, including the Canberra Stadium . Some of the Institute's training programs are offered in field offices in other Australian cities.

The AIS was founded in 1985. The trigger was the poor performance at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal , when not a single Australian won a gold medal. Since then, the institute has produced numerous Olympic and world champions.

Institute

The AIS employs 190 people. These include trainers and specialists in the fields of sports medicine , nutrition , performance analysis , biomechanics , applied research, talent search, school training for athletes, fitness , psychology and physiotherapy . The AIS has its own basketball, soccer and netball teams that play in the lower leagues.

Every year the AIS offers scholarships for over 700 athletes in 35 different funding programs in 26 sports. Also disabled athletes in the areas of athletics, swimming and skiing to alpine benefit from the scholarships.

Since July 1st 2001 there is also the Olympic Winter Institute of Australia . This specializes in winter sports, which have been booming in Australia since the late 1990s.

After numerous football players had decided to play for other national teams (especially Croatia ), they now have to sign a contract. According to this, they are obliged to reimburse the training costs in such a case.
