Atelari has 1616 inhabitants (2015), of which 815 are men and 801 women. The population density is 52.6 inhabitants / km². There are 313 households in the Suco. Over 95% of the population name Makasae as their mother tongue. The rest of the population speaks Tetum Prasa .

Before the 2015 territorial reform, Atelari had an area of ​​40.95 km². Now it is 30.72 km². The Suco is located in the southeast of the Laga administrative office. To the northeast is the Suco Tequinaumata and north of the Suco Sagadate . In the east, Atelari borders on the administrative office of Luro (municipality Lautém ) with its Suco Afabubu and in the south on the administrative office of Baguia (municipality of Baucau) with its sucos Lavateri , Defawasi and Uacala . The river Gomilafo rises in the west of the Sucos and initially follows a piece of the border with Lavateri, but then swings to the north and crosses the Suco to flow on to Sagadate. In the northeast of Atelari, the Liqueliu rises , into which the Gomifalo later flows. The Liqueliu leaves the Suco to the north. Both rivers belong to the Dasidara system .

A country road runs right through the center of Sucos, from north to south, which connects the towns of Baucau and Baguia. The towns of Atelari , Lauadae ( Lavadae ), Loilari , Uaraba and Buadolo are located on it . To the east of the road are the villages of Samagata , Uatalofo ( Uatalolo ), Siguilaba , Liarafa , Sirimana and Nelu Uai ( Nelouai ). There are primary schools in Atelari, Samagata and Loilari.

In the Suco there are the ten Aldeias Atelari , Auraba , Lauadae , Liarafa , Loilari , Nelu Uai , Samagata , Siguilaba , Sirimana and Uatalofo .

history

At the end of 1979 there was an Indonesian camp for East Timorese in Atelari , who should be relocated by the occupiers for better control.

In 1980, Fernando Teles do Nascimento, a member of the FRETILIN Central Committee, was killed in a battle in Atelari .

In 1999 a collection camp was set up in Atelari for the demobilization of FALINTIL by the United Nations.

On June 28, 2015, a soldier in Atelari was shot by members of the Konseilu Revolusionariu Maetze (KRM).

In the 2004/2005 elections , António Manuel Guterres was elected Chefe de Suco and confirmed in his office in 2009 and 2016 .
